MEET THE TEAM
Izabel Phillips Company Director / Principal Ecologist
Phillips Ecology was established in 2018 and has since grown to a small and busy consultancy. My career started back in 2008 with an exciting trainee position in another busy Hampshire consultancy. After finishing my degree in Conservation and Wildlife management and spending a few more formative years in consultancy, I moved into a senior position at HCC. Here I was responsible for providing specialist ecological advice to external Local Planning Authorities (SDNPA, Test Valley Borough Council, Winchester City Council, Fareham Borough Council, etc.) on planning applications ranging from householder applications to major development applications and major infrastructure projects. My time was also spent managing the ecological elements of various housing and infrastructure projects in the County. I returned to consultancy after six invaluable years before establishing Phillips Ecology in 2018. It’s hard to believe that 15 years have passed since I began my career but it’s wonderful to reflect on how fulfilling and enjoyable the time has been.
A weekend which includes kitesurfing, mountain biking, birding, walking or belly boarding with family and friends is well spent!
Trevor D Codlin MCIEEM Principal Ecologist
My experience spans a number decades and involves surveying and monitoring a variety of species and habitats. During this time I have managed the ecology aspects of a range of projects including major infrastructure projects in the South. My specialisms are birds and bats, but I also have extensive experience working with marine, terrestrial and aquatic mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
I love the challenge of finding evidence of species to understand how they are using sites and designing effective mitigation strategies.
When not working I spend much of my time taking photos (of wildlife), monitoring bird populations, through bird ringing, surveys and projects. I have spent over 30 years monitoring nightingales in Hampshire and recently set up the Hayling Island Ringed Plover Project. I have a particular interest in animal or bird behaviour and love just sitting a watching and documenting it.
Katy Goddard Ecologist
I moved into UK ecology work 4 years ago after working with wildlife in various roles since university, including zoo keeping and animal behaviour research. I have learnt so much since joining Philips Ecology and continue to do so both from my colleagues and from attending external courses which the company supports. I feel being an ecologist suits me well as it is a combination of my favourite parts of all my previous roles. Our work helps to protect our local environment, and it involves elements of field work, report writing, people management and client interactions.
A year involving camping, wildlife watching, walking, travel, seeing friends and family, boardgames and craft is usually a good year.
Connor Hill Assistant Ecologist
For as long as I can remember I have always been passionate about all thing’s wildlife and the outdoors. In 2017 I was fortunate enough to volunteer with a conservation project in Borneo where I quickly fell in love with surveying the local flora and fauna, realising this was the career path I wanted to follow.
My role in the team is to assist with surveys, report writing and occasional graphic design work. The geniality and enthusiasm of my colleagues is simply contagious and working alongside a team with decades of joint experience in the field has been invaluable for me. This job makes me proud to say that I actively look forward to Mondays!
In my spare time, I enjoy a range of sports including: running, tennis, badminton and occasionally kayaking. Since moving to Hampshire, I have loved exploring both the South Downs and New Forest national parks and observing the array of species present within them.
On the many rainy days England has to offer, I spend my time indoors editing wildlife pictures and videos photos I have captured on my adventures, and playing board games with friends.
Sue Sheppard Virtual Assistant
I’m the ‘pressure release’ valve for Izabel and her team at peak times. Helping with administration for the business, quote letters, telephoning customers, undertaking any business admin research.
I love working with the team at Phillips Ecology and relieving them of routine administrative duties which in turn helps them carry out important work to help preserve our fragile environment and the impact we humans have on our local ecosystems.
Out of hours I like to chase a white ball around a field (or golf as it’s called) and when I’m not doing that, I love to walk in our beautiful countryside. Cottage gardening is also a hobby and I’m looking forward to harvesting produce from our newly acquired allotment.
